Conservationists call for ‘true ban’ on super trawlers

The debate over super trawlers was hot political news the last time federal Labor was in power and saw fisheries company Seafish Tasmania blocked from using the what was then the world’s second-largest trawler, the Abel Tasman, in Australian waters.

The Coalition later legislated a ban on the vessels, but conservationists say a new report indicates the ban is too narrow and that the definition of what a super trawler is needs refining.
