Let's ban the Supertrawler for good!
The Supertrawler is gone from Australian waters. But we need to make sure that NO foreign freezer factory trawlers can wreak havoc on our marine life, fisheries and fishing communities again.
Sign the petition to permanently ban Supertrawlers from Australian waters today.
Dear my MP (CC Senator Ruston, Minister Frydenberg, Mr Fitzgibbon, Mr Burke, Senator Whish-Wilson),
I am very pleased to hear that the Geelong Star Supertrawler has chosen to leave Australian waters.
However, I am extremely concerned that without a permanent ban in place, this or other foreign freezer factory trawlers could return, wreaking havoc on Australia’s marine life, fisheries and fishing communities.
The Supertrawler became a key issue in this year’s federal election, and the recent Senate Inquiry report has recommended a permanent ban on freezer factory trawlers in Australia’s Small Pelagic Fishery.
I was pleased to see Labor and the Greens support this recommendation. But I am very disappointed that Coalition members of the Committee did not support the permanent ban.
I call on the Coalition to support a permanent ban on all freezer factory trawlers in Australia’s Small Pelagic Fishery – to protect our marine life, our fisheries and our fishing communities.
