Sign the petition to ban Supertrawlers from our waters

Thanks to overwhelming community outrage, the Supertrawler is gone from Australian waters. Now the Tassie Government is permanently banning Supertrawlers from Tasmanian coastal waters.

But we need to make sure NO foreign freezer factory trawlers can wreak havoc on our marine life, fisheries and fishing communities again – ANYWHERE around Australia.

It’s time for the Turnbull Government to follow the Tasmanian Government’s lead, and ensure Supertrawlers are gone from our waters for good!

Petition to the Australian Government

Dear Minister Ruston and Minister Joyce,

I was greatly relieved when the Geelong Star Supertrawler left Australian waters at the end of last year, and I welcome the Tasmanian Government’s new permanent ban on Supertrawlers in Tasmanian waters.

However, I am extremely concerned that without a federal permanent ban in place, this or other foreign freezer factory trawlers could return, wreaking havoc on Australia’s marine life, fisheries and fishing communities.

The Supertrawler became a key issue in the 2016 federal election, and the recent Senate Inquiry report recommended a permanent ban on freezer factory trawlers in Australia’s Small Pelagic Fishery. Labor and the Greens support this recommendation, but I was very disappointed that Coalition members of the Committee did not support the permanent ban.

It’s time for the Turnbull Government to follow the Tasmanian Government’s lead, and ensure Supertrawlers are gone from our waters for good!

I call on the Coalition to support a permanent ban on all freezer factory trawlers in Australia’s Small Pelagic Fishery – to protect our marine life, our fisheries and our fishing communities.

Yours sincerely,
