Sign the petition to fight the cuts to marine sanctuaries

The Coalition Government’s plans for our National Network of Marine Sanctuaries have passed through the Federal Parliament, robbing Australia of nearly half the sanctuary protection our oceans so desperately need.

Some of our best loved and most critically important sanctuaries have been wiped off the map.

Sign the petition calling for our sanctuaries to be fully restored.

Dear my MP (CC Melissa Price MP, Tony Burke MP, Senator Whish Wilson and key senators in my state),

I am deeply concerned that the Coalition Government has removed half of Australia’s marine sanctuaries (green zones) – cutting back an area almost twice the size of Victoria.

I urge you – as my MP – to do everything you can to make sure your Party has a policy of fully restoring Australia’s sanctuaries (green zones).

Australia is responsible for the world’s third largest ocean territory, home to diverse and unique marine life. The health of our marine life is central to our Australian lifestyle, to local livelihoods, our reputation as a tourism destination and to local economies.

The Coalition Government has ignored decades of science, the advice of its own independent review, the wishes of local communities, and the voice of hundreds of thousands of Australians who have been consulted over the years while Australia’s marine parks network was in development.

In one of the biggest marine science statements of concern ever, 1470 of the world’s scientists rejected the proposed cuts. More than 80,000 Australians made a submission asking for more protection, not less. This included over 16,000 recreational fishers.

The plans slash protection for many of Australia’s top marine icons, including one of Australia’s oldest sanctuaries at Lord Howe Island, the Kimberley and worst hit is the Coral Sea – the cradle to the Great Barrier Reef.

It is clear the Government’s plans will not do the job of protecting Australia’s marine life and benefiting local communities. Our sanctuaries (green zones) must be restored.

I ask you to do everything you can to make sure your Party has a policy of fully restoring Australia’s sanctuaries (green zones).

Yours sincerely,
